From Asphalt Shingles to Zinc Strips

Shingle Repair Recommendations For A Long-Lasting Roof

Just because your home's roof is up out of your reach does not mean that it is impossible for you to handle its condition. As a homeowner, you can complete some simple repairs on your roof to make updates and keep it in good condition until it is time for it to be replaced with a new roof and shingles. Here are some recommendations that you can use to maintain and make your own repairs to your home's roof.

Check For Problems

Asphalt shingles on your roof will be installed in a geometric pattern upon your roof, which will make it easy for you to identify problems and damage. Keep an eye on your roofing shingles on a weekly basis; for example, when you complete any yard work or each time as you arrive at home from being out. Look for any irregularities in the appearance, such as missing or broken shingles or edges of the shingles that have begun to curl up.

Be sure to look at each side of your home's roof, especially the side that is exposed to the sun during the day. The sun's rays are quite damaging to your asphalt shingles and will begin to wear out the southern-exposed side of your roof more quickly.

Also, check your roof for any damage after a heavy wind or rainstorm. Often this type of extreme weather can lift and loosen shingles to break them in half or send them flying into your neighbor's yard.

Complete Easy Repairs

When you encounter any roof and shingle damage, it is important that you repair it as soon as possible to keep the protective barrier on your home. The longer your roof is exposed with a set of missing shingles, the more likely it is to sustain moisture damage to the interior.

When a shingle has broken and come loose from your roof, replace it with a new shingle. You may have some stored away from the last roof installation on your home, or you can buy a pack from a local home improvement retailer. It may not be possible for you to get an exact match for the replacement shingles, but it is more important that your roof is protected for the time being. You can always have your roof replaced professionally if you are concerned about your home's appearance in a real estate sale, for example.

If you find a shingle that is curling up, you can secure its corners with roofing cement. Apply it onto the underside of the shingle and press it onto the roof until it has dried.
